The Matang Mangrove Forest in Kuala Sepetang is a rare jewel among the sights to see in Perak. Lauded by various researchers and journals as the best-managed sustainable mangrove ecosystem in the world, this 40,000-hectare forest reserve is home to a wide range of wildlife including one of the two known species of pink freshwater dolphins in the world and is a treat for nature lovers. It is a well-known attraction for bird watching enthusiasts as well, since the mangrove forest is also home to over 155 species of birds including the seldom seen Great Argus Pheasant (known locally as Kuang), the Brahminy Kites and the White-bellied Sea-eagle.

If you would like to get up close and personal with the mangrove ecosystem, there are wooden boardwalks available to approach the animals that live in the muddy coastal floor as well as to examine the mangrove trees up close. For more information regarding the flora and fauna, you can visit the Nature Education Centre to learn about the mangrove environment. Did you know that like all mangrove swamps, the Matang Mangrove Forest has been proven to act as a natural barrier against tsunamis?

Undoubtedly an important forest for the wildlife and locals alike, visitors could contribute to the forest by participating in the replanting of saplings of Rhizophora and Lenggadai trees. It is a reforestation program that is carried out by the Perak State Forestry Department to ensure the longevity and preservation of this wonderful ecosystem. While you’re there, you can also study the many different ways of fishing using floating fish-cages along the Sungai Sangga which is home to fishing villages that were built on wooden stilts.

There are 3 chalets available at the Matang Nature Education Centre as well as a campsite located near the riverbank. Campers have to bring their own camping gear and tent. Homestay programs are also available in abundance throughout the fishing villages here.
