If you’re ever in the mood for an adventure, Gua Tempurung will certainly deliver. Located 24km south of Ipoh, it is one of the most well-known caves in the country. The entire cave is over 3km long and made up of five large domes that are not unlike the shape of a coconut shell, thus earning its name (‘tempurung’ means coconut shell). Each of these ancient domes, believed to be about 10,000 years old, has different calcium and marble formations that owe their existence to the differences in temperature and water level.

As a show cave, it is much more accessible to the public and not exclusively for cave enthusiasts and spelunkers. There is a range of tours available that varies in terms of lengths and difficulty. With the basic tour, you could have a quick look into the cave to see the grand 90-metres-tall Golden Flowstone and the many stalagmites and stalactites of various shapes and sizes sculpted by nature.

Further into the cave if you were to choose a more comprehensive tour, you will find the Wind Tunnel where it’s cool and breezy. This phenomenon is due to the different temperatures within the cave itself. Among the many things you will see in this section includes the Fallen Warrior and Battlefield Cavern with natural formations that resembles a warrior falling down in a battlefield. Beyond this section, it’s going to get wet.

For the more adventurous visitors, the complete tour includes activities such as crawling through holes, sliding down slippery stones, climb almost vertical walls and traverse through the 1.6km long underground river that passes through the hill. Be sure to bring comfortable clothes and hiking boots with a good grip. For the more physically-intensive tours, it is recommended that you bring gloves, kneepads, a change of clothes and towels (though you probably should leave them in your vehicle after the tour’s done). Your tour guide will bring a torch so you won't need to. However, if you come in a big group, additional torchlight will come in handy.
