Harum Manis Mango served traditionally with pulut.

It is often described to have rich, sweet flavour and succulent flesh.

How much would you pay for a mango? RM5? RM7? Would you care to try a mango that costs RM50? That’s quite expensive for a fruit that’s common to this part of the world, but that is the price of the fabled Harum Manis. It is a fruit that is closely associated with Perlis as the fruit is exclusively grown there. Whenever the season for the fruit comes around, people from all over the country would flock to the northern-most state just to have a taste of it. It’s so popular that Harum Manis mangoes are even pre-booked online, way before it ripens. With all this in mind, what makes the Harum Manis so special?

As the name suggests, compared to the average mango, the Harum Manis is especially fragrant and sweet. It is also rich in antioxidant vitamins such as C and E. The fruit contains water-soluble fibers that help digestion, control cholesterol levels and dilute phlegm. As of 2017, the price per kilogram ranges from RM20 to RM50. The fruit’s harvest season spans from mid-April to early June.

Traditionally, the Harum Manis is served with pulut (glutinous rice). For the uninitiated, it does sound like a bizarre combination, but the dish itself is equally popular with the fruit that it’s widely available in the cafés and restaurants in the state of Perlis. The fruit is also commonly made into mango cordial and fresh juice.

A lot can be said about the actual taste of the Harum Manis itself, but words often fall short in describing it. The texture of Harum Manis is soft and pleasant, as is the aroma that fills your nose and mouth as the sweet juices flood through your taste-buds. It is simply an experience that you have to try yourself. For those who are still skeptical about it, the long-standing reputation and popularity of the fruit is a testament to its own unique flavor.
